Aldi Joins Grocers Avoiding Finely Textured Beef
Aldi is the latest grocer to announce it will no longer sell beef containing so-called "pink slime," or lean finely textured beef, the company said. The filler generally is produced by heating the remaining tissue on a beef carcass, then using ammonia to kill bacteria from the heating process, Buffalo News reported. However, some grocers, such Wegmans, have disclosed that they only sell ground meat containing lean beef trimmings if the filler has been processed using citric acid, which is considered preferable to ammonia.
