Amazon Aims to Hire 75K, Offers Bonuses for Vaccines

Amazon is on a hiring spree with the goal to add another 75,000 employees to its workforce. And the e-commerce giant is using the COVID-19 vaccine as an incentive bonus.

Amazon is looking to fill roles across its U.S. and Canadian fulfillment and logistics network. New hires who come to Amazon already vaccinated will receive a $100 bonus, Chain Store Age reported. The average starting pay for the open roles is $17 per hour, plus a sign-on bonus of up to $1,000. The company has not required employees to get a COVID-19 vaccine, though it is encouraged.

Executive Summary

The hiring blitz comes as the U.S. economy only added 266,000 jobs in April – well below estimates. Many retailers and businesses cannot find enough workers to fill open positions.

Amazon hopes to attract more workers through its incentives, as well as “industry-leading” benefits, such as health care, vision and dental insurance, 401(k) with 50% company match, paid parental leave, and access to various company-funded upskilling opportunities.

“We look forward to hiring 75,000 associates across our fulfillment and transportation network,” Alicia Boler Davis, vice president of global customer fulfillment at Amazon, said in a statement. “Working at Amazon also comes with an unwavering commitment to safety, especially as we continue to navigate a global pandemic.”

Amazon opened vaccination events in late March at its fulfillment centers in Missouri, Nevada and Kansas to help employees get vaccinated. Since then, Amazon has expanded the events to more than 250 locations across the U.S. and Canada and offers more than half a million front-line employees, contractors and partners access to COVID-19 vaccine.
