Amazon patents technology for robotic janitors
According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, Amazon.com Inc. has patented technology to allow robots that transport inventory around its warehouse floors to take on more tasks, such as taking inventory, mopping, sweeping and waxing floors.
Instead of designing robots dedicated to specific tasks like cleaning, the patent describes various tools that can be easily attached and removed from the existing robot fleet.
"A robot can retrieve a shelving unit comprising one or more inventory items and delivery it to a work station, for example, for fulfillment of an order or restocking," the filing states. "The robot can then return the shelving unit, pick up a base tool, such as a robotic arm or camera tool, and perform additional operations without permanent modifications to the robot."
