C-Stores See Sales Being Siphoned By Other Formats

Grocery stores, dollar stores and drug stores are fulfilling more of the needs of convenience store shoppers, with these other stores representing 9.3 percent of c-store traffic in the quarter ended December 2011, up 2 percent from the year-ago period, NPD Group reported. Overall c-store traffic declined by 2 percent in the quarter from the prior-year period. Traditional reasons for shopping at c-stores, such as convenient location, quick purchasing and hours of operation, are now the same attributes shoppers want at non-traditional convenience store outlets, such as grocery stores.
