As the labor market gets increasingly difficult for retailers, Dollar General is going back to school to look for retail recruits.

The company announced that it will be hosting an inaugural College Symposium this fall aimed at providing prospective graduates with an overview of opportunities available to join one of America’s fastest-growing retailers. Graduates looking to enter the following fields are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Finance

  • Store Operations

  • Legal

  • Supply Chain

  • Real Estate

  • Risk Management

  • Transportation

  • Construction

  • Human Resources

  • Merchandising

The company said that its inaugural Dollar General College Symposium will be held at its corporate offices on Nov. 13. Qualified candidates will have the opportunity to network with fellow professionals, learn business strategies and tactics, meet Dollar General leadership and provide insight on multiple career opportunities within Dollar General.

In September, the company announced that through Sept. 23, Dollar General will hold recruiting events across 44 states,  offering interview opportunities for candidates looking to "join a company that embraces innovation, diversity and teamwork," according to the company.

The announcement comes as the labor market for retail talent drastically tightens at the worst possible time: the holidays. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 757,000 retail job openings across the U.S. in July, about 100,000 more than the same time a year ago. And the number of openings surpassed the number of hires from March through June for the first time in a decade.

Dollar General says it plans to create approximately 7,000 net new jobs in 2018 and is seeking store managers, assistant store managers, lead sales associates and part-time and full-time sales associates to support its retail store operations. The Company is also seeking district managers and regional directors.

In order to participate, interested candidates must complete an application with one to two paragraphs on why they’re interested in attending the Dollar General College Symposium before Oct. 4.
