Dollar Stores Continue Expansion into Food Markets
The profit gap between Dollar General's traditional dollar stores and its newer Market stores is narrowing, The Wall Street Journal reported. During the next year, Dollar General plans to open about 40 Markets in food deserts. The Markets are about 16,000 square feet, twice the size of most dollar stores, and feature more groceries. Overall, the company saw net profits rise 22 percent in 2011 to $766 million, while revenue at stores open at least a year climbed 6 percent, the story said.
