Dollar Tree names new retail leaders

Dollar Tree named former Walmart executive Duncan Mac Naughton and current executive Gary Philbin to key roles that offer insight into a potential succession strategy.
Philbin, 60, was elevated to the role of Enterprise President of Dollar Tree Inc., with responsibility for store operations, merchandising, marketing and real estate across all banners including Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree Canada. He will continue to report to Bob Sasser, 65, a longtime Dollar Tree executive who has served as CEO since 2004.
Philbin’s previous role as president and COO of Family Dollar, a retailer Dollar Tree acquired in July 2015, will be filled by Duncan Mac Naughton, 54. He most recently served as President and CEO of Mills Fleet Farm, an operator of 36 stores throughout the Midwest focused on active, outdoor families and suburban and farm consumers. However his more relevant experience came several years earlier at Walmart. Mac Naughton will report to Philbin.
“Since joining Dollar Tree in 2001 as senior vice president of stores and later as president and chief operating officer, Gary has played an integral role in our growth, success and sector-leading profitability. With his experience at Dollar Tree, Dollar Tree Canada and most recently his outstanding leadership as President of Family Dollar, Gary is uniquely positioned to contribute to our continued success in his new role as enterprise president,” said Dollar Tree CEO Sasser.
Regarding the addition of Mac Naughton, Philbin added, “Duncan is an accomplished retail leader and will be instrumental in continuing to develop and improve the Family Dollar banner through an intense focus on the customer.”
According to Mac Naughton, “Our focus will continue to be on meeting the everyday needs of our customers – through providing terrific values, affordable prices, and the right assortment in clean, convenient and shopper friendly stores.”
In pursuit of those goals, Mac Naughton brings a wealth of experience to Family Dollar, including a notable tenure at Walmart, where he helped restore growth to the company’s U.S. stores division. From 2011 until late 2014, Mac Naughton served as chief merchandising and marketing officer of Walmart U.S. Prior to that he served as head merchant of Walmart Canada for a little more than a year and prior to that he spent three years with Supervalu as executive vice president of merchandising and marketing.
Dollar Tree Inc. is a roughly $20 billion retailer that operates a total of 14,284 stores as of the end of its third quarter on Oct. 29, 2016, consisting of 7,964 Family Dollar stores and 6,320 Dollar Tree stores.
