Food Lion opens new Virginia store

The grocer is continuing its expansion, this time with a relocated location in South Boston, Virginia.

Food Lion this week will open a new, relocated store in South Boston, Virginia. 

The new store will open to customers on March 8, according to a press release sent to Retail Leader. The South Boston store will include an “extensive product assortment,” Food Lion says, which includes fresh sushi, pre-cut fresh fruit and other grab-and-go options. 

The grocer last month opened a new store in Inwood, West Virginia, Retail Leader previously reported. The Virginia store is the second new store of the year for Food Lion, which opened four new stores in 2022. 

Food Lion says customers can expect to find an array of products that range from organic to gluten-free and plant-based. Food Lion will also stock its private label Nature’s Promise brand. Private-label brands have become increasingly popular among consumers searching for value amid economic pressures. Other features include a walk-in cooler, a self-service hot wing bar and an Asian food bar, according to the release.

Shoppers will also see: 

  • Self-checkout lanes.
  • Energy-efficient overhead LED lighting.
  • Food Lion To Go’s grocery pickup, which lets them place orders on the grocer’s website or app.
  • Fresh produce from nearby Reese’s Farms in Scottsville, Virginia. 
  • Beverages from Halifax, Virginia, Springfield Distillery. 

Food Lion is owned by Ahold Delhaize, which is the third-largest supermarket operator in the U.S., behind Kroger and Albertsons, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF) “Top 100 Retailers” list. In addition the Food Lion banner, Ahold Delhaize owns the Fresh Direct, Giant, Hannaford, Stop & Shop and Peapod banners in the U.S.
