Matt Furlong has been named CEO, starting June 21, while Mike Recupero has been named CFO, Chain Store Age reported. Both held senior positions at e-commerce giant Amazon.

Furlong most recently served as Australia country leader at Amazon and was previously technical advisor to the head of Amazon’s North America consumer business. Recupero, who begins his new role July 12, is a 17-year veteran with Amazon, most recently serving as CFO of the North American consumer business after serving as CFO of Prime Video.

“These appointments reflect the refreshed board’s focus on building a technology company and investing in growth,” the company stated.

Furlong replaces George Sherman, who was appointed to the CEO role in April 2019. GameStop previously announced Sherman would step down at the end of July or earlier if a replacement was found sooner. The company has had four people serve as CEO over the last three years.

The turnover comes after an activist investor, Ryan Cohen, co-founder of Chewy, joined the board of directors and subsequently became chairman of the board.

GameStop has recruited a number of other former Amazon hires, including COO Jenna Owens;  Chief Growth Officer Elliott Wilke and Chief Technology Officer Matt Francis.
