Sustainable seafood innovator Alaskan Leader Seafoods recently won several awards for product quality earning the company a big fan in Texas-based H-E-B.

Alaskan Leader recently earned two awards in the 25th annual Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation award competition known as Symphony of Seafood. Alaskan Leader, which prides itself on being a vertically integrated “hook and line” company, was recognized with a “Best in Retail” award for its Lemon Herb Butter Marinated Cod. The company also received a “Best in Beyond the Plate,” award for its Cod Crunchies brand of pet treats.

“Lemon and butter certainly enhance the eating experience for many seafood items, however, more importantly, it all comes down to taking care of the fish. Alaskan Leader Seafoods has the best quality Alaska cod in the market, period,” said Jason Driskill, Director of H-E-B Seafood Procurement.

H-E-B likes Alaskan Leader's product and approach (one fish at a time on a line) so much that the retailer featured the company in a recent ad campaign for fresh seafood.

Alaskan Leader is unique in the sense that it resembles a fishing cooperative that is still 50% owned by the original seven fishing families who founded the company more than 25 years ago. The company also boasts that its vessels are the newest and the cleanest in the fleet and maintained so well the company is able to fly the Maltese Falcon Cross, which is a symbol of inspection excellence from the American Bureau of Shipping. In addition, Alaskan Leader notes that all of its vessels are American built and U.S. Coast Guard inspected and licensed.

The Symphony of Seafood competition is designed for new value-added products made from Alaska seafood with the overall goal of inspiring innovative ways to fully utilize and increase the value of Alaska’s seafood. Products were recognized in four categories including, retail, foodservice, beyond the plate and beyond the egg.
