How Petco is selling pet wellness

By Gina Acosta - 11/03/2017

Petco is keeping pace with pet category trends by remodeling stores to put a greater emphasis on pet health.

The retailer is celebrating the opening of five remodeled stores with new in-store veterinary hospitals and other wellness services. The stores, located in California, Colorado and Texas will offer pet parents a full suite of in-store veterinary care and wellness services through Petco's newest store design.

According to Research and Markets, pet owners increasingly expect a more varied selection in store aisles as well as pet food offerings that specifically promote health and wellness. Health and wellness concerns are a primary driver of increased sales in the pet category, with more and more pet owners turning to functional treats for health conditions that are often age- or weight-related, including joint/mobility, skin/coat and cognitive.

Petco stores aim to provide a one-stop shopping experience where pet parents can purchase anything from pet food to toys and apparel, while addressing the holistic well-being of pets via the grooming salon, dog training area, and an expanding array of veterinary service offerings for good pet health.

In addition to new in-store veterinary hospitals, Petco stores also offer on-site vaccination and wellness clinics operated by Vetco, and digitally-delivered pet health advice through PetCoach.

Wellness Centers offer pet parents convenient and affordable pet wellness and vaccination services inside select Petco and Unleashed by Petco stores.

Petco will also celebrate the grand re-openings of five relocated stores and one expanded store this month.

Petco operates more than 1,500 Petco and Unleashed by Petco locations across the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico.
