Hy-Vee plans super-sized convenience store in Minn.
The West Des Moines, Iowa,-based grocery chain is planning a super-sized convenience store and gas station in Lakeville, promising to offer time-strapped, on-the-go customers plenty of prepared meals and scaled-down versions of its typical produce, dairy and meat departments and Market Grill restaurant. A Starbucks coffee shop will be tucked in one corner of the store.
Hy-Vee operates 142 smaller convenience stores, including 16 in Minnesota, where it also has 23 full-size grocery stores, including a half-dozen in the Twin Cities area, where the retailer has been significantly expanding its presence over the past two years. Hy-Vee told the Pioneer Press that it's seeking other sites around the Twin Cities for supersized c-stores.
Not shy about experimenting with different store formats to target diverse consumer needs, Hy-Vee is planning a small-format store in its headquarters area that would be a pickup point for online grocery orders. The combined market and gas station would offer groceries and might also include a quick-serve restaurant.
Additionally, the retailer reportedly is planning a “health market” concept in the Des Moines area that would include a pharmacy, clinic and fitness studio.
Hy-Vee operates more than 240 grocery stores across eight Midwestern states.
