The deal consolidates the growing instant needs delivery space as startups like Gorillas continue to expand their footprint. Gorillas is one of the grocery delivery companies that promises ultra-fast delivery in a little as 10 minutes. Frichti, which launched in 2015, delivers both ready-to-eat meals and groceries

Executive Summary

The instant needs category has taken off since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as consumers ordered everyday items and essentials through online platforms. The rising demand has led to increasing competition in the space that has attracted billions from investors––and created a loop of increasingly-faster delivery services, with some companies offering fulfillment and delivery of orders in 10 to 15 minutes.

Frichti also offers private label products in addition to its meals and grocery products, and the company boasts 450,000 customers in eight cities in France and Belgium. The acquisition enables Gorillas to expand in these key markets. Gorillas opened 22 stores in five French cities in less than a year, and the deal expands the company’s offerings to create a unique selection of multi-category goods.

“Frichti is an inspirational brand with incredible talents and values. What Julia, Quentin and the Frichti team have created in France is exceptional,” Kagan Sümer, founder and CEO of Gorillas, said in a statement. “They are not only one of the first ones to have discovered the immense potential of quick commerce, but also one of the first movers into private label and ready-to-eat segments.”

According to Gorillas, both companies bring complementary strengths to the deal, including Frichti’s long-standing expertise in building a sustainable operational network as well as their strong technological infrastructure. Gorillas has an ability to scale operations that will enable growth of the on-demand delivery services in Europe and beyond.
