Lidl brings its version of cheap groceries to America
A total of nine Lidl stores in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina opened Thursday. The company plans to open about 100 stores along the East Coast by the summer of 2018.
In the U.S., Lidl stores are approximately 36,000 square feet — about the size of a typical Food Lion store. The stores have six aisles, and each store has a bakery near the front entrance. Dairy, frozen foods, and beer and wine are on the store’s periphery.
Lidl is opening its first U.S. stores ahead of the company’s original schedule, which may be a strategic move in the Richmond market. Florida-based Publix is also preparing to enter the Richmond market this summer. Publix bought 10 of 19 area Martin’s stores.
