Lidl to open first U.S. stores in New Jersey
German grocery chain Lidl is closer to debuting its first stores in the United States, with at least one store now planning to open in 2017 in New Jersey.
The Press of Atlantic City is reporting that the retailer has local approvals for stores in Millville, Vineland and Upper Deerfield Township, all in New Jersey. Construction of the Vineland facility is already underway.
Last year, Lidl opened its U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Va., and confirmed plans to open stores along the East Coast from New Jersey to Georgia. The retailer had previously said that it expected its first U.S. stores to open beginning in 2018. But that timeframe has been moved up. The three stores in New Jersey are part of Lidl’s plan to open as many as 150 stores on the East Coast by the end of 2017.
