Meds Plus Cigarettes: a Bad Combination

02/27/2015

Patients with health problems exacerbated by smoking buy cigarettes or other tobacco distressingly often at the same time they pick up their medications, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study, based on sales data submitted by CVS Health, looked at the purchase patterns of customers who were filling prescriptions to treat diabetes, hypertension, asthma and other conditions that smoking can worsen. It found that roughly 1 in 20 such patients bought tobacco during the same trip at least once in the study period, which took place before CVS stopped selling tobacco.
