PetSmart has a new marketing chief

Just a few months after PetSmart's merger with, PetSmart is adding some digital marketing heft to its ranks.

The retailer has named Joshua Kanter as executive vice president of Marketing and Customer Experience. Kanter will oversee all aspects of PetSmart’s brand marketing, digital, media and creative to integrate the customer experience across PetSmart’s 1,600 stores and online. 

“Joshua is a highly experienced executive with a proven track record of building successful consumer-facing brands,” said Svider. “We continue to position the business for success as the leading brick-and-mortar and online company in pet specialty retail, and we are confident Joshua is the right leader to support our unique mission and brand.”

In May, PetSmart made the largest e-commerce acquisition in history by acquiring for $3.35 billion — just a bit more than Walmart paid for around the same time. Chewy provided high-level customer service capabilities online that complemented PetSmart’s extensive retail store network 

According to PetSmart, Kanter brings deep experience in data-driven marketing, loyalty strategy, digital advertising and branded customer experience.

Kanter joins PetSmart from Viking Cruises, where he served as senior vice president of Marketing Strategy. Prior to that, he held the role of senior vice president of Marketing at Caesars Entertainment and earlier, he was an associate principal at McKinsey & Company.
