Publix reverses policy on HIV drug
Publix is changing its employee prescription plan to cover a drug that helps prevent HIV infections after public outcry on social media.
Over the past few weeks, media reports and social media posts had highlighted that Publix denies employees access to an HIV prevention medication.
On Tuesday, the company announced a policy change via its official Twitter account, saying it will now cover Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) -- a medication that reduces the risk of catching HIV.
Also on Twitter, Publix responded to questions, saying that it evaluated "what is covered by our health plan and have made the decision to expand our health plan’s coverage of Truvada to include Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). We are working with our pharmacy benefits manager to implement this change as quickly as possible."
Publix's policy change came less than 24 hours after store executives met with Florida Rep. Carlos Smith. During their meeting, Publix confirmed they did not cover PrEp.
