Target to launch mobile payments app
Target is developing its own in-store mobile payments system for a debut sometime this year.
Target Chief Information and Digital Officer Mike McNamara confirmed the news to Recode at the National Retail Federation (NRF)’s annual Big Show in New York. It’s not clear whether Target will add the payment feature to its main Target app, its popular Cartwheel coupon app, or both. Recode's report states that initially, it will only be available to the store's REDcard payment-and-loyalty card users.
"Target’s technology team is working in an agile way," McNamara said in a statement on Target's A Bullseye View blog. "What I’m perhaps most proud of is how our new way of working is taking root in other parts of Target, beyond technology teams. Agile sets us up for more innovation and for becoming a leader in how technology and data science can (and will) enhance the retail experience. We’ve got lots of work to do still, of course, but I’m excited about the progress we’ve made and what’s in store for Target’s future."
Target's news follows similar moves by Kohl's and Walmart, which launched a mobile payment app in 2015.
