Walmart may be close to acquiring Humana
Walmart has named a former executive at Humana to run the retailer's health care business.
According to Bloomberg, Sean Slovenski most has been named as senior vice president of health and wellness for Walmart, effective Aug. 1.
The move opens up the two companies to more speculation that they might be merging. Walmart, like other retailers such as Amazon, has been increasingly looking for ways to expand into the health care sector.
The companies already work together on prescription drug plans for individuals in the U.S. Medicare program, according to Bloomberg. The plans offer some prescriptions for as little as $1, as long as customers pick up their drugs at a Walmart or Sam’s Club. Walmart could use a closer tie-up to steer more of Humana’s customers to its 4,700 pharmacies.
Slovenski was most recently president of the population health business at Healthways, which is now part of digital-health company Sharecare Inc. Walmart recently teamed up with Sharecare to give employees access to resources to monitor their health, and Sharecare will play a part in the retailer’s in-store Wellness Days for customers, where it offers free health screenings.
