Walmart, McKesson Partner for Lower-Priced Generic Drugs

The move is a win for McKesson’s generic drugs buying unit, which was hurt by the expiration of its contract with UnitedHealth Group’s Optum unit and changes in contracts with Omnicare and mass-merchant Target. Each week, roughly 140 million customers visit Walmart’s stores, and the retailer makes about $20 billion in pharmaceutical sales annually, including $4 billion from generics. Walmart has been pushing for years to reduce generic drug prices as it attempts expansion into health care, which can help bring more people into stores.
