Wegmans shoppers in Manhattan may have to wait
Wegmans Food Markets is being careful to manage the expectations of Manhattan residents now that it provides delivery to the heart of New York from a recently opened store in Brooklyn.
Manhattan residents ordering from Wegmans Foods Markets are being advised their delivery order could take up to five hours. Wegmans recently announced plans to offer delivery to all zip codes in Manhattan from its recently opened store in Brooklyn. That store is fairly close to lower Manhattan, just across the East River about a mile into Brooklyn, but traffic congestion in Manhattan has the retailer hedging its bets about when deliveries will be made. To accommodate the longer drive times, delivery to Manhattan addresses often requires longer delivery windows, ranging between two and five hours, the company warned when the delivery service was announced.
The service expansion comes four months after Wegmans opened in Brooklyn and precedes a second near-Manhattan opening scheduled for June 7 in West Harrison north of Manhattan.
“Expanding delivery into Manhattan has been on our radar since opening our Brooklyn store,” said Erica Tickle, director of e-commerce for Wegmans. “We’ve heard from customers this would make life easier for them, and with major investments in e-commerce like our new website and app, the timing couldn’t be better to make ordering favorite Wegmans brand products and fresh foods available for delivery to Manhattan.”
In partnership with Instacart, Tickle said Wegmans has seen tremendous growth and success with its online grocery shopping and delivery services. Both areas represent a growing percentage of Wegmans sales, “and with larger delivery radiuses, we’re able to reach more customers in New York, and other markets where traffic and transportation prohibit customers from coming to us,” Tickle said.
Wegmans delivery starts at just $3.99 – or free for Instacart Express Members – on orders of $35 or more. For delivery, Wegmans adds a price increase to items ordered to cover the cost of Instacart shopping services.
