Winn-Dixie Same-Store Sales Climb 3.3 Percent

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Winn-Dixie reported a net loss of $24.1 million on net sales of $1.6 billion for its first quarter of fiscal 2012, ended Sept. 21. The loss was an improvement from the company's net loss of $76.8 million in the year-ago period, reflecting higher margins and trimmed expenses, while sales climbed 3.1 percent, MarketWatch.com reported. Basket size increased 5.5 percent from a year ago, pushing same-store sales up 3.3 percent from the prior-year period. The chain also announced plans to spend $125 million on remodeling and new store development during the fiscal year.
