The refrigerator would use the same cashierless technology as Amazon’s grocery stores and be able to scan for low-stock items or expiring products and make refill orders, according to Progressive Grocer. The report, which originated from Business Insider, comes as Amazon has expanded its grocery platform and cashierless technology, even testing it at some Whole Foods Market locations.
The smart refrigerator is being led by Amazon’s physical-stores unit, which also created the Just Walk Out technology. The same team is behind the smart shopping cart called the Dash Cart and the palm-reading system, Amazon One. Amazon's Fresh grocery team and the Lab126 hardware unit are also involved in the fridge project.
