The Same-Day Select service is a membership add-on to the company’s current same-day delivery service. The service allows members to pay a one-time fee upfront for either an unlimited number or a set number of same-day grocery deliveries. The deliveries are completed in as little as two hours, according to BJ’s.
The launch comes just after the warehouse retailer announced a partnership with DoorDash to offer delivery services through DoorDash’s app. That digital offering is available to BJ’s members and non-members. BJ’s is the first warehouse retailer to debut on the DoorDash app.
BJ’s has been testing its Same-Day Select services over the last six months. There are two options for members to utilize the service:
Multipack: 12 free deliveries for a one-year period ($55)
Unlimited: Unlimited free deliveries for a one-year period ($100)
“This program was designed to help our members take advantage of the benefits of Same-Day Delivery, while saving them time and money,” Tim Morningstar, executive vice president and chief membership officer of BJ’s Wholesale Club, said in a press release. “The immense success in our testing shows that our member recognizes the added value that this service provides, further contributing to the benefits of being a BJ’s member.”
BJ’s expansion of its services comes as retailers are still ramping up their digital offerings and omnichannel presence. Demand for grocery delivery services skyrocketed in 2020 as COVID-19 lockdown measures pushed consumers out of stores and toward delivery. BJ’s partnership with DoorDash reveals the retailer is leveraging third-party opportunities in addition to ramping up its own delivery capabilities.
“We know convenience and value are key to our members, and with BJ’s Same-Day Delivery, our members can have all the great value they expect from the club delivered right to their front door,” Monica Schwartz, executive vice president and chief digital officer of BJ’s Wholesale Club, said in a statement.
Members can enroll in Same-Day Select online, with all grocery items, including fresh foods and everyday household essentials, available for delivery. Same-Day Select members receive in-club pricing and the ability to earn rewards and use BJ’s coupons. Orders must meet a $60 minimum to qualify for delivery.
By comparison, Walmart recently dropped the $35 minimum order requirement for its Walmart+ grocery delivery service. Walmart+ is the retailer’s membership loyalty program that offers delivery services. However, the service does not promise a two-hour delivery window in most cases for groceries.
BJ’s latest move adds to its growing omnichannel presence, including offering shopping options at BJs.com, using the BJ’s mobile app, with digital coupons, in-club pickup, curbside pickup, same-day delivery and ExpressPay. The expansion of Same-Day Select could influence other retailers to step up their grocery delivery offerings. However, the retailer also recently came under fire after Walmart filed a lawsuit against BJ’s over its checkout technology at Sam’s Club. Walmart alleges BJ’s copied its Scan & Go technology and packaged the same digital tool as Express Pay at BJ’s locations.
