Easy Pickings Over for Upscale Grocers


When it comes to the upscale grocery market, salad days are over and tougher competition is ahead, according to the Wall Street Journal. Industry leader Whole Foods is experiencing a slowdown in same-store sales, Fresh Market had a sharp drop in fourth-quarter income and is closing stores, and shares of Fairway Group Holdings are trading for only 58 percent of the IPO price. The Journal cited increased competition, not only among upscale grocers but from mainstream ones introducing high-end products.
