Ex-Meijer exec could be heading to academia
The current vice chair and former CEO of Meijer is a top pick to be the next president of Michigan State University.
Mark Murray was Meijer’s president and CEO from 2006 to 2015. He was also state treasurer and budget director under Gov. John Engler.
During Murray’s tenure as president, the company’s chain of supercenters grew from 175 to 199, while the workforce shrank about 18 percent to 62,000. Annual sales reportedly rose about 21 percent to more than $14 billion in 2011, making it the largest family-owned company in West Michigan.
Murray received his Master's degree in Labor and Industrial Relations and his Bachelor's degree in Economics from Michigan State University.
