Florida Senate Panel Moves to Prohibit Food-Stamp Purchases of Junk Food

A Florida Senate committee voted 4 to 2 to exclude soda, candy and other so-called junk food from the list of items that can be purchased with food stamps, The Miami Herald reported. But some state senators opposed the measure Jan. 25, suggesting the state would be overstepping its bounds by regulating foods purchased through the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
