Food Prices: Up, up and away
Two-thirds of executives surveyed believe commodity prices will be the primary driver of food price inflation in 2012, according to new research conducted exclusively for Retail Leader. Overall, more than half expect to see price increases of more than 3 percent at their stores in the coming year.
Fielded in mid-August 2011, the survey also reveals that almost half plan to offset margin pressure by ramping up consumer promotions, with one-third looking at offering targeted discounts.
In their assessment of current business conditions, only about one-fifth of respondents remain positive, compared with one-quarter just a month earlier. The outlook continues to darken, with only one-quarter calling for positive conditions in the next six months, compared with one-third in the earlier survey.
