H-E-B launch ignites shopping frenzy
Sales of a limited edition shopping bag with a picture of singer Selena on it caused chaos at H-E-B stores across Texas on Friday, selling out within minutes and crashing the retailer's websites.
H-E-B stores started selling the Selena bag at 9 a.m. on Friday and long lines at H-E-B stores all over the state were reported. Stores sold out of the bag within minutes, leaving hundreds of shoppers disappointed. By 10:30 a.m. Friday, they were sold out in all stores across Texas.
The bag was also being sold on heb.com and hebtoyou.com. But by noon all of the H-E-B e-commerce sites were sold out of the bag and the websites had crashed.
A spokesman for H-E-B confirmed to Retail Leader that sales of the bag had crashed the websites for at least an hour. There was no estimate for when the websites would be back online.
The bags were priced at $2 and made of 100% recyclable material.
By 9:15 a.m. on Friday, H-E-B's Selena bags were listed on eBay for as much as $50 each.
"At H-E-B, we’re excited to offer our customers this commemorative Selena bag, which is a tribute to such a beloved personality whose music continues to inspire people everywhere," said Cory Basso, H-E-B Group Vice President of Marketing and Advertising.
The grocery chain worked with Selena's sister Suzette Quintanilla to create the design of the bags.
"Working with H-E-B to create this bag was a highlight for me," Quintanilla said. "This bag will help The Selena Foundation give back to our community and gives Selena’s fans something to tote around."
H-E-B said it will donate $25,000 to The Selena Foundation, a foundation that will dedicate these funds to the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastal Bend.
