Throughout September, SpartanNash and its 140 corporate-owned stores are supporting Family Meals Month and challenging customers to share one more meal at home per week using items purchased from the grocery store.

“Kids who share meals with their families are more likely to eat healthy foods and have higher grades, and SpartanNash is proud to do our part to support our store guests as they look for healthy, nutritious ways to bring their families together at the dinner table,” said Ted Adornato, SpartanNash Executive Vice President and General Manager of Corporate Retail. “During Family Meals Month and beyond, we hope all our store guests will ‘raise their mitt to commit’ to more family meals.”

Store guests will be able to find tips and tricks to make family meals easier online, in-store and through social media, depending on their location and favorite SpartanNash store. Family-friendly recipes will also be available in stores. Along with Family Meals Month, recipes with fruits and vegetables will be shared using the hashtags #familymealsmonth and #MoreMatters throughout September to promote the More Matters campaign.

The news comes shortly after the company announced its second quarter report which ended July 14. Net sales increased $39.8 million, or 2.1 percent, to $1.90 billion from $1.86 billion in the prior-year quarter. The increase in net sales was driven by continued sales growth in the food distribution and military segments of 4.3 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively, partially offset by lower sales at retail. Gross profit for the second quarter of fiscal 2018 was $265.7 million, or 14% of net sales, compared to $271 million, or 14.6% of net sales, in the prior-year quarter. As a percent of net sales, the change in gross margin was primarily due to an increased mix of Food Distribution and Military sales as a percentage of the total sales combined with investments in the margin.

SpartanNash currently operates 140 supermarkets, primarily under the banners of Family Fare Supermarkets, D&W Fresh Market, VG's Grocery, Dan's Supermarket and Family Fresh Market. Through its MDV military division, SpartanNash is a leading distributor of grocery products to U.S. military commissaries.
