Take a tour of Walmart's new tech hub

By Gina Acosta - 02/16/2018
Earlier this month Walmart acquired Spatialand, a boutique company described as a revolutionary VR design platform.

Walmart's focus on innovation and technology is taking the company to Austin, where the retailer is opening a new technology hub.

Walmart says its technologists at its facility, called Wallmart Tech ATX (scheduled to officially open on Feb. 22), will focus on innovation and explore emerging capabilities like machine learning, artificial intelligence, internet of things and natural language processing for non-consumer-facing areas of the company.

The hub is located in downtown Austin in the original Alamo Drafthouse building at the intersection of 4th and Colorado streets.

Walmart has been investing heavily in technology and e-commerce.

Walmart already has a technology hub in Silican Valley called Store No. 8. That hub is working on an initiative to run an Amazon Go-style cashier-less store, as well as a personal shopping service run by Rent the Runway founder Jenny Fleiss.

Earlier this month Store No. 8 acquired Spatialand, a VR design platform and toolset for enterprise, brands and consumers to create immersive content destinations.
